Acupuncture may double the chances of a woman conceiving with IVF, a study has found.
Acupuncture 'doubles the chances of getting pregnant through IVF'
Over 46 per cent of women undergoing acupuncture treatment conceived
While only 21.7 per cent of the women became pregnant in the other group (ie no acupuncture)
Treatment may be offered as a possible method of improving IVF outcome
Expert says it may only work due to patient spending time with practitioner (ie follow a treatment plan outlined by a qualified practitioner)
Among couples undergoing the fertility treatment, the likelihood of pregnancy was greatly improved if the woman also had acupuncture.
Scientists at Homerton University Hospital studied 127 women aged between 23 and 43, on their first or second cycle of IVF. They were split into two groups – one having four sessions of acupuncture while undergoing IVF, and the other having none. Among the treatment group, 46.2 per cent conceived – more than twice as many as in the other group, where only 21.7 per cent of the women became pregnant. The needle technique was used before any eggs were retrieved from the woman’s body – and then again before and after the fertilised embryo was implanted. More on this study click here
Classical Acupuncture has been very successful in providing specialised treatment for women promoting infertility , pregnancy care and postpartum recovery.
Today this care is becoming increasingly valued in New Zealand, as it is in England, Germany and France where acupuncture is available in specialised antenatal clinics and maternity hospitals.
Value is therefore placed on promoting preventative care to strengthen the mother and baby as well as dealing with problems as they occur during pregnancy.
Acupuncture is a safer, effective and drug free treatment during pregnancy.

An example of an Acupuncture Treatment Pregnancy Plan:
After you have fallen pregnant and successfully reached 36 weeks, it is advisable to have a pre labour treatment.
This consists of 2 treatments per week until your 39/40th week. After that we can start an induction programme to facilitate a smooth and efficient birthing experience for you physically an emotionally.
This gets you body ready and relaxed allowing enough of the vital elements to be present for your laboring experience, for example: Building your energy and blood flow, stimulating the uterus and baby aiding in a possibly shorter and less painful labour and a quicker recover.
This also affects baby and ensures that he/she is calm as well.
